Declutter Before You Move — The 30-Day Method

The cheapest box to move is the one you never pack. Spend 30 days decluttering and you'll save real money, real time, and real space at the new place.

01The rule: one room per 3 days

Don't try to do the whole house in a weekend — you'll burn out by Sunday afternoon and quit. 90 minutes per room, 3 days each, 30 days total.

02The 4-box system

In every room, set up four boxes: Keep · Sell · Donate · Trash. Touch each item exactly once and decide. No 'maybe' pile — that's the enemy.

  • Keep — only what you've used in the last 12 months
  • Sell — Bazaraki for furniture, Facebook Marketplace for everything else
  • Donate — clothes & books to local charity shops
  • Trash — broken, stained, expired

03Hardest categories

Books, kids' toys, kitchen gadgets and 'sentimental' items resist hardest. Take a photo of sentimental things you don't actually use — the memory is in the photo, not the dusty object.

04Sell-by dates matter

Moving expired spices, old medicine and ancient paint across town is paying €25/m³ to relocate trash. Bin it.

05Bonus: book a clearance with the move

Loading 'trash boxes' onto the same truck on moving day is 50% cheaper than a separate clearance run.

Key takeaway

Less stuff = cheaper move + faster unpack + calmer first week. 30 days is enough.
